Napoleon Hill 1883 – 1970 was an American author and was one of the earliest writers of modern personal success guides. His most important book, "Think and Grow Rich" [1937], is one of the best-selling American books of all time.

Hill was an archetypal American. That led to many critics and detractors pointing out that only USA could ever be successful. according to Hill. He believed freedom, democracy, capitalism, and social harmony to be essential elements to his philosophy. He claimed that without these socio-political foundations, successful personal achievement is not possible. He compared this philosophy with others and thought that his was superior. He felt that it was responsible for the success Americans enjoyed for the previous two centuries.

Negative emotions such as fear, selfishness and so on, had no part to play in his philosophy. Hill considered those emotions to be the source of failure for unsuccessful people so that it was their own faults for not thinking like Americans. In this sense, Hill’s formula for success has a psycho-religious basis similar to the Hindu worship of the goddess Laxmi. Think these thoughts; perform these rituals each day; hold these beliefs; change your attitude towards things that happen; expect to be rich and successful. It is as if he is saying, "You can be rich and successful only if you believe the things I believe."

Hill did not tackle the more difficult problem that most [not all] rich and famous Americans came from rich and famous dynasties. They had taken advantage of the new continent in the 18th and 19th centuries, dispossessed the native tribal peoples, denuded the landscape and brought animal species to extinction, owned slaves, paid minimum wages to their labourers, and had taken big risks with other people’s money.

Hill was very much influenced by Andrew Carnegie. Carnegie was also impressed with Hill and asked him to interview or analyse over 500 successful men and women, many of them millionaires, in order to discover and publish this "formula for success."

As part of that research, Hill interviewed many of the most famous people of the time, including Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, George Eastman, Henry Ford, Elmer Gates, John D. Rockefeller, Sr., Charles M. Schwab, F.W. Woolworth, William Wrigley Jr., John Wanamaker, William Jennings Bryan, Theodore Roosevelt, William H. Taft and Jennings Randolph. Hill was also an advisor to two presidents of the United States of America; Woodrow Wilson and Franklin D Roosevelt.

The Consciousness of Prosperity

Andrew Carnegie had long amassed his great wealth and was one of the richest men in the world when he met little-known journalist Napoleon Hill in 1908. Hill’s assignment was to write a series of articles on the most successful businessmen of the time. According to Hill, Carnegie said what he used a simple formula that was available to all, and commissioned Hill to interview 500 successful people in the world to acquire practical evidence of what Hill later called, ‘the Secret’ of wealth-creation.

Like Carnegie, Hill was born into poverty and struggled to survive in the world. 20 years later, Hill would publish the results of his research, which he called the Philosophy of Achievement in his book, The Law of Success. 11 years later, a smaller version of the Law Of Success was published as “Think and Grow Rich.” The central premise of “Think And Grow Rich” is: “Everything your mind can conceive, you can achieve.” While Hill does not explicitly use terms like ‘Law of Attraction’ or ‘thought vibration’, he does supply the points that are part of the Law of Attraction discourse: that thoughts determine your reality, the use of creative visualization, maintaining a positive attitude and surrounding yourself with positive people. Hill’s book made him wealthy, selling millions upon millions of copies, while setting the standard in the field of self-improvement through prosperity consciousness.

Think and Grow Rich! (ISBN 1-59330-200-2) is a classic motivational book. Written by Napoleon Hill and inspired by Andrew Carnegie, it was published in 1937 at the end of the Great Depression. In 1960, Hill published an abridged version of the book, which for years was the only one generally available. In 2004, Ross Cornwell published Think and Grow Rich!: The Original Version, Restored and Revised (Second Printing 2007), which restored the book to its original content, with slight revisions, and added the first comprehensive endnotes, index, and appendix the book had ever contained.

The text of Think and Grow Rich! is founded on Hill’s earlier work, The Law Of Success, the result of more than twenty years of research based on Hill’s close association with a large number of individuals who achieved great wealth during their lifetimes.

At Carnegie’s bidding, Hill studied the characteristics of these achievers and developed fifteen “laws” intended to be applied by anybody to achieve success. Think and Grow Rich! itself condenses these laws further and provides the reader with 13 principles in the form of a philosophy of personal achievement.

Reflected in these principles is the importance of cultivating a burning desire, faith, autosuggestion and persistence in the attainment of one’s goals. Hill also discusses the importance of overcoming many of the common fears that can adversely affect one’s thinking and potential.

In his introduction, Hill refers to the “Carnegie Secret”, a conception which he reports is the foundation of all success and appears to be the premise of the book. Hill promises to indirectly describe this “secret” in every chapter, but never state it plainly, believing the use of the secret is only available to those who possess a “readiness” for it, a disposition Hill describes as essential to the concept itself.

Think and Grow Rich has sold consistently since its first publishing. According to one publisher, the book has now sold more than 30 million copies worldwide. Think and Grow Rich is currently ranked #9 on the BusinessWeek Best-Seller List for paperback business books and has been on the aforementioned list for 22 months as of April 2007. from Wikipedia

Over and over again, some person in our life would tell us this cliché — the more we think that we can have something we want so badly, we will eventually get. You would surely agree with me that the line has gotten quite overrated to a certain extent. It might have become our mantra at a time when our desire to achieve a goal had reached a point of desperation. It is a theory that many of whom claim had really worked for them would swear by. There are law of attraction stories from people around the globe.
